Lang Co Beach

With its gradually slopping, white sand beach, the average depth of less than 1m and the average temperature in the bathing season of 25?C, Lang Co is an ideal beach for tourists.

Lang Co Beach lies on the most beautiful curve of the “S”, where you can be the first to see the sun rise in Vietnam. Lang Co attracts visitors for its wild beauty with mountains, forests and sea.

Located on the northern part of Hai Van Pass on National Highway No.1A, about 80km south of the imperial city of Hue, Lang Co Peninsula looks even more mythical and beautiful amid the blue sea and white sand. Visitors can see many local wonders and landscapes such as Chan May, Mo and Hoi Cam streams. Tourists can enjoy sea diving, mountain climbing, and fishing with local fishermen. From Lang Co, visitors can easily reach other beautiful beaches on Son Tra Peninsula or take a boat to Ngoc Island, where they can participate in several aquatic activities.

Hoang Tien Dzung, chairman of the Management Board of Ha Long Construction Company, which is developing a tourist resort in Ngoc Island, said that the island will become a national conservation centre for its richness in biodiversity, especially its coral and bird life.

“Formerly, the French admired Lang Co as a lost paradise, which has inspired many poets and writers,” Mr Dzung said. “The People’s Committee of Thua Thien-Hue province is planning to further exploit Lang Co’s potential to boost eco-tourism.”

The province launched a big festival called “Lang Co – the myth of the sea” on August 20. So far, it has attracted more than 10,000 visitors with diverse cultural and aquatic activities. Local authorities have also organised a seminar to introduce Lang Co’s potential to investors.

Nguyen Duy Giam, director of Thua Thien-Hue’s Tourism Promotion Centre, said that Lang Co lies within the Chan May-Lang Co site, which is part of the major economic project embracing Canh Duong, Lang Co, Hai Van and Non Nuoc areas.

“An international resort centre with 12 functional sections will be built in this area,” Mr Giam revealed. “It will include a golf course, villas and coastal resorts, hotels, restaurants and trading areas, and a cultural and artistic centre.”

By now, 20 projects have committed to investing in the Chan May-Lang Co tourist site. Each project will cost between US$3-5 million and cover hundreds of hectares. During the past five years, these projects have helped upgrade infrastructure in the Canh Duong-Lang Co area, making it more attractive and accessible to visitors. Noteworthy is that the number of tourists to the fairyland of Lang Co has increased remarkably since the opening of Hai Van Tunnel. Great efforts are being made to awake the once-forgotten paradise and bring its potential into full play to serve the people.

Hai Van Pass

Hai Van Pass is lying on National Highway No1A on the border between Thua Thien – Hue Province and Danang City. Hai Van Pass is like a giant dragon and which is considered to be one of the largest frontier posts in Vietnam. The name De Nhat Hung Quan, meaning the most colossal frontier post, is engraved on an incense burner in Thai Temple.

In the past, Hai Van Pass was known as the Thuan Hoa and Quang Nam frontier. In the early 14th century (1306), Che Man, a king from Cham Pa, offered two mountainous administrative units of O and Ri as engagement gifts to Princess Huyen Tran, daughter of King Tran Nhan Tong. On his way to see off the Princess in the Quang area in a summer sunny noon, the King and his entourage were on horse back for almost half a day but could not reach the top of the pass. Facing upwards, the King saw a rampart of mountains in dim clouds, and at the foot of the pass, an immense ocean, of waves. Though sorry for his daughter’s difficult journey, the king was comforted by the closer ties between the two nations.

Whenever one goes through Hai Van Pass, two feelings are experienced: amazement at passing through the clouds and fear when seeing the dangerous bends of the road. A 21km-long road over Hai Van Pass, opened at the end of the 19th century, winds back and forth to a height of 435m above sea level. With sudden curves and blind corners, Hai Van Pass is likened to an arrogant but beautiful girl challenging drivers’ skills. Its name means “Pass of the Ocean Clouds,” since the peak of the mountain is in the clouds while its foot is close to the sea.

From the top of Hai Van Pass, one can admire Lang Co Beach to the north and Danang to the south. The curving railway through Hai Van Pass is 3,200m long including sections running through seven tunnels. There are endless forests to the west of Hai Van Pass and the ocean is to the east. Hai Van Pass is a real challenge for drivers, as well as for adventurers.

On a journey through the land, Hai Van is always an attractive landscape. Hai Van is highest pass in the country, full of perilous obstacles and is the last spur of the Truong Son Range reaching to the sea. In “Phu Bien Tap Luc”, Le Qui Don, the Viet Nam scholar who lived in the XVII century wrote that Hai Van with its foot standing in the sea surface and its summit covered with clouds. The pass standings as a borderline divide Thuan Hoa and Quang Nam provinces.

On the top of the pass are the vestiges of long ago, a fortified gateway. The gate facing to Thua Thien province is inscribed with the three words “Hai Van gate” and the other gate looking down on Quang Nam province is engraved “the most grandiose gateway in the world”. In the XVI century this land belonged to Cham Kingdom and was given to the Dai Viet as an engagement present for the Princess Huyen Tran of the Tran Dynasty. The old story is only a memory, old vestiges covered with green moss, among vast spaces vast of plants and trees, tourists are filled with the emotions of the past.

Hai Van means winds and clouds. Winds like a herd of horses galloping a number of miles, clouds like pouring from haven. Cao Ba Quat, the poet living in the XVII century only respected apricot blossom (Nhat sinh de thu bai mai hoa) was surprised when he was before the landscape: Nhat bich ngung vi gioi – Trung van nhieu tac thanh. On the summit of Hai Van pass, a panorama of the Danang city, Tien Sa port, Son Tra peninsular, Cu Lao Cham and a long white sandy beach can be seen.

Whatever endowed by nature, time by time and by hands of man will be something of humanitarian values. Coming to Hai Van is to come to the sanction of two land, to satisfy the peak-conquering philosophy, to mix ourselves in to echo of heroic songs of Vietnamese ancients when they went to find new lands to be emotional to prolong past of the Center region where suffering a lot of losses in the course of finding and protecting the nation.

Peach flower

Spring would mean little to people in northern Vietnam if there is no peach flower. It is the special flower of the Vietnamese New Year because of its red colour, which is believed to bring many favourable opportunities throughout the year. Hence, as is the custom, every Vietnamese family, rich or poor, has to get a branch of peach blossoms in the house.

From time immemorial, the flower‑growing village of Nhat Tan in Hanoi has been known for its many kinds of peach flowers: dark purple, pink, bonsai peach, etc. In the northern mountainous regions, the peach trees grow naturally into forests, giving the Spring a beautiful scape. After defeating the feudal Chinese invadors of the Ming empire in the well‑known battle of Dong Da in the Spring of Ky Dau (1789), Quang Trung sent an emissary to Phu Xuan, southern Vietnam, carrying a blossom of peach flowers as gift to his wife, Princess Ngoc Han.

Today, there are four varieties of peach flowers. The dao bich has a deep rosy colour and the plant bears many flowers; it is usually planted in jars or pots for entertaining during the New Year. The dao phai (pale peach flower) flower is a pale rosy colour and the plant bears many flowers, but is generally planted for its fruits. The dao bach (white peach flower) is relatively difficult to grow. These three varieties of peach flowers all bear double flowers. The that thon plant is small and low; the flowers are small and of many colours.

Among those colours, those that are deep red are generally grown in pots and their trunks and branches generally bend so that it becomes an ornamental plant. The sprigs of the peach flowers from the of Nhat Tan are a precious gift sent to relatives living in the South on the occasion of the New Year. The peach flower plant and its flowers are now present in many European countries.

is very popular among growers in Da Lat because it is easy to grow and yields high returns.

As legend has it, a Roman general captured two  young prisoners and kept them in his house. His two daughters fell in love with   the   two   prisoners. When the  general  discovered this situation, he became   angry and made the two prisoners fight each  other  in a duel. However, the two young men  refused  to fight and fixed their swords into the ground. The general ordered them beheaded. Strangely enough, as soon as their heads touched the ground,   the   two swords turned into flowers the shape of a sword. In Latin, “gladiolus”  means  a  short sword.  Da Lat’s gladiolus has several colors ranging from white, yellow, to purple. However, the most abundant is red and the most valued is the same red as  Bordeaux wine. Da Lat sells its gladioli throughout the entire country, especially during the Vietnamese Lunar New Year (January-February). The Vietnamese believe it symbolizes promise and love.

Lim festival

The Lim festival, opening on January 13th (lunar year), is the leading Quan Ho song festival as many famous Quan Ho Song villages in the area take part in it.

Speaking of Lim festival is dealing with Love Duets which annual happens from 13th to 15th of 1 lunar month at Noi Due, Tien Son, Bac Ninh (30km distance from the North of HaNoi). Lim pagoda lying on red-soil Lim hill is very large and airy with a lot of eucalyptus and couch trees and is a place worshipping Bodhisattva kwan Yin, Van Tuong pagoda is a place of offerings of village elders. Inside, Buddhist priests hold are mony, outside, Buddhist nuns recite the Buddhist scriptures and sing the oldest Love Duets. People here though are farmers and craftsmen like people in other villages, they like singing and they have created a kind of original art which is Love Duets. This is a kind of repartee singing between men and women. From these singing events, many have failed in love and became couples. They’ often sing lyrics with pianissimo, ligature melody and a lot of refrains to sing the praise of the heartfelt emotion of human, sing the praise of love, loyalty, friendship and country.

During festival, young men and women from other villages come to Lim hill, Lim pagoda together to sing. They are called brothers and sisters groups. Most village people can sing since small. Growing, they have more chance to meet and sing to each other. Even become elders, they still sing. The artists in Love Duets villages are those who have beautiful singing voice and master hundreds of Love Duets tunes. In many places, people sing Love Duets inside, on the hill and on boats. In order to welcome singing partners visiting and taking part in village festival, people sing inside. Hosts and hostesses welcome guests in early morning of the day occurring festival, lead them to pagoda to kowtow Buddha then come back home. Love Duets singing events take place familiarly, naturally as soon as guest comes in singing greeting new year. They sing greeting, inviting betels, missing friends, exchanging emotion and repartee tunes. Then they sing to part with each other and promise to see in next years festival.

No one knows when Love Duets event start taking place, just see men hold umbrellas and women wear flat palm hat with fingures, dressy in lots of clothing. They meet and invite each other by songs in which they show happiness as they meet again. Love Duets rouse great love in the hearts of brothers and sisters. That is the great love of traditional songs of their country, of green fields, rivers, hills and mountains, moss-grown communal house of village rising up in singers and listeners hearts noble and inviolable sentiments.

During singing session, one part sings ahead. The latter will sing in contrast a song which is of tunes the same or nearly the same as the former’s. Singers can sing about anything as village gate, communal well, cloud, flowers, butterflies, small bamboo trees, banian trees, conical hats, umbrellas, sedge mats… and they sing passionately. Brothers and sisters will sing all a watch, no the superior, no the inferior. Each has their ovon grace and charms. Normally, each singer can sing nearly 200 Love Duets tunes and they can sing from dusk up to tomorrow early dawn.

Young men and women who want to find their partners often come up hill to sing. There men hold umbrellas while women are wearing flat palm hats, no care of sunny or rainy weather. They even can sing all night to show their love sometimes ebullient passionate, sometimes graceful and be fervent with amorousness.
When singing on boats, each pair of men and women sit on a coracle on village pond. Village people
gather tightly at the edge of the pond. Which pairs sing beautifully and be loved will get cash bonus, which is called “Wishes money” and be packed in a red paper, from audiences throwing down.

There are about 500 Love Duets songs, but people just sing beloved songs. Art groups and creating artists consider these a varied, plentiful supplementary subject sources. The vitality of Love Duets is very durable. They are handed down from the former generation to the latter generation and they are heartily welcomed every where. When watching Love Duets singing, audiences not only be passionately deep in enjoying the voice of singers, but also watch their appearance and clothes.

49 Love Duets villages observe New Year’s Day on 12th of 1st lunar month every year. They pack “Chung” cake (square glutinous rice cake) on these days and prepare for the festival on the next day singing Love Duets to Bac Ninh people in particular and to Vietnamese as a whole is considered immarterial cultural value which is needed to be maintained and preserved. Love Duets to composers or nationalists, is an interesting and attractive studied subject and needed to be surveyed and exploited more deeply.

Moon cakes

These are a sweet specialty found throughout Viet Nam in Mid-Autumn. If a cake is perfectly made, one can finish the entire treat without feeling bloated. If not. then even one slice can seem too much. The recipe determines how delicious, rich, or soft a cake is and how long it will last without spoiling.

Moon cakes are made with a variety of tastes, old and new. According to the manager of the Long Xuong Bakery in District 5, Ho Chi Minh City, Chinese people living around Cho Lon made the first moon cakes. A traditional Chinese moon cake should Taste sweet and fatty and should smell of therapeutic herbs. Some experienced bakers make the filling of these cakes with Chinese dried sausage, roast lean pork, and fish fins. They mix the ingredients with herbs and spices, especially dried ginger, in a special formula that offers both salty and sweet tastes.

Moon cakes made in northern Viet Nam are also sweet but less rich than those from the south. Their fillings often smell of lemon leaves, mandarin orange, and grapefruit peels. Deo (soft) moon cakes made in Ha Noi are especially delicious. The fragrance of grapefruit flowers emerges as soon as you bite into the coating of sticky-rice paste.

Some moon-cake producers in Ho Chi Minh City such as Kinh Do, Dong Khanh, Ai Hue, Hy Lam Mon also add mixtures of coconut and milk, taro root and milk, durian, green bean, and cocoa or hazelnuts. A few local bakers add whisky to give their cakes’ filling a special taste. Thanh Long in Ho Chi Minh City even makes diet moon cakes that are cholesterol-free and taste less sweet.

Other cakes bear influences from beyond Viet Nam. The Equatorial Hotel makes Malaysian-style cakes from red beans and sesame oil. or lotus seeds and sweet-smelling leaves. They cover the cakes with a coating of chocolate. Hong Kong’s Saint Honore Cakes also come in many flavours, including soybeans with orange flavour, white lotus, black beans, and lotus seeds with tea.

Most moon cakes are either round or square. However, some are shaped like pigs or fish.

Moon cakes can be eaten right after they are made, but they definitely taste belter when eaten at the right time. Traditionally, a moon cake is served three days after baking so that the oil in the filling can seep into the coating, making it soft and creating a delicious, rich taste. Newly baked cakes tend to be dry and hard. Today, however, according to Luu Lap Chanh. owner of Hy Lam Mon Bakery in Ho Chi Minh City, modern technology and new recipes allow the oil to seep into the coating in just twelve hours, although this makes the cakes less tasty than the traditional three-day method.

Moon cakes are often packed with sugar and calories. According to the Kinh Do Confectionery Company in 116 Chi Minh City, a 200-gram cake filled with green beans contains as many as 700 kilocalories. whereas an adult needs about 2.000 kilocalories a day for basic health. A moon cake has all the ingredienis for putting on weight: starch, fat. and sugar. Sugar accounts for between 40% and 60% of a cake’s weight. Thus, an average 200-gram cake may contain more than 100 grams of sugar. Cakes that are high in sugar, roast pork, fatty meat, and oily fillings provide even more calories.

Moon cakes are easy to keep. During normal weather conditions, they can last fifteen days. Some vacuum-packed cakes, those packed in airtight boxes with humidity or oxygen absorbers, and
those treated with ultraviolet rays may last longer, but ihey still should be eaten within one month. Consumers should be careful about cakes that are kept in normal conditions yet seem to last several months; !he producer may have used an anti-mold agent, which is believed to be harmful to health.

Perfume pagoda

Perfume pagoda Location: Ha Tay, Vietnam
Perfume pagoda,Ha Tay,Vietnam
More images

Chua Huong (Perfume pagoda) is located in Huong son (Perfume mountain) 70 km southwest of Hanoi. Chua Huong is not one temple but a cluster of temples and shrines in the general vicinity of Huong son. The pagoda(s) are located in My Duc hamlet in the province of Ha Tay.

According to the book, Huong Son Thien Tru Pha, Huong Tich temple was built during the reign of Le Chinh Hoa (1680-1705), by a monk who happened on the site on his way to search for enlightenment. Other shrines and temples were later built in this area to take advantage of the beautiful scenery in this area.

A complex of pagodas and Buddhist shrines built into the limestone cliffs of Huong Tich Mountain (Mountain of the Fragrant Traces) makes up the Perfume Pagoda (Chua Huong; admission 17,000d plus 8000d return boat trip). Among the better-known sites here are Thien Chu (Pagoda Leading to Heaven); Giai Oan Chu (Purgatorial Pagoda), where the faithful believe deities purify souls, cure sufferings and grant offspring to childless families; and Huong Tich Chu (Pagoda of the Perfumed Vestige).

The entertaining boat trip along the scenic waterways between limestone cliffs takes about two hours return; allow an additional two or three hours return to climb to the top. A word of warning: bring good walking shoes! The path to the top is steep in places and if it’s raining the ground can get very slippery.

Great numbers of Buddhist pilgrims come here during a festival that begins in the middle of the second lunar month and lasts until the last week of the third lunar month (usually corresponding to March and April). It’s very busy during this period, especially on the even dates of the lunar month; you’ll have a much easier time if you establish the lunar date and plan to go on an odd date. In 2002, on the particularly auspicious sixth day of the first lunar month, 3000 boats crammed the waterway and there was a boat jam that lasted from noon until 9pm! Weekends tend to draw crowds all year, when pilgrims and other visitors spend their time boating, hiking and exploring the caves. Litter and noisy stalls and hawkers are part and parcel of the visit, and some hawkers are persistent enough to hassle you all the way to the top; you have been warned!
